The Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology Inc (AIFST)’s 39th Annual Convention took place at the Adelaide Convention Centre from 9 – 12 July and was proudly supported by CSIRO Human Nutrition, Australian Food and Grocery Council and Food Standards Australia New Zealand.
The Convention brought hundreds of key Australian food scientists and industry professionals together to discuss the latest issues and ideas in food science and technology.
Media coverage of issues such as obesity, food safety, health and nutrition made a major contribution to the public’s awareness of the importance of food science.
“Over 90 expert speakers shared the latest research and findings with 500 delegates attending the Convention,” said Ken Grice, President, AIFST.

Minister opens Convention - The Hon Christopher Pyne MP, Minister for Health & Aging officially opened the Convention and congratulated the AIFST for raising awareness of important food science and technology issues.
From farm to fork (sponsored by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry) – Julia Cocks, Bright Brewery spoke on the boutique beer boom – perspectives from a regional brewer. A slice of regional entrepreneurship was covered by Fiona Barber, Springhill Farm and Toni Lutfi, Greenwheat Freekeh spoke on innovative nutraceutical products.
New device to measure potential quality of grapes on the vine - measuring the potential wine quality in a bunch of grapes, before they are picked? Dr Aggie Cox led a discussion on a new move designed to improve Australia’s international wine competitiveness.
Can resistant starch prevent colorectal cancer? Dr Richard Le Leu explained how the complex carbohydrate, resistant starch, may prevent colorectal cancer (CRC), which kills around 90 people in Australia each week.
New age grains to combat disease – Dr Matthew Morell showed ways to modify cereal grains to help lower the prevalence of type 2 diabetes, obesity and colorectal cancer.
Loose weight, prevent cancer and live longer - Associate Professor Manny Noakes covered recent studies revealing that even a small sustained weight loss can be more effective than pharmacological approaches to disease prevention.
Australia urged to lead the battle against food allergies - Dr Steve Rizk, a leading US food allergy expert urged the Australian government, industry, consumer groups and researchers to work together to lead the fight against food allergies. In another allergy session, Dr William Smith discussed ways to tackle the rising rate of food allergies.
According to Mr Grice the Convention also acted as way to recognize significant contribution to the industry through the AIFST awards.
This year’s awards recognized David Williams, a Fellow of AIFST and recently retired Managing Director, Symise Pty Ltd. Mr Williams was awarded the prestigious 2006 AIFST Keith Farrer Award of Merit.
Sipahh, an innovative straw that that adds flavour to milk and has the potential to add energy, vitamins and other supplements to liquid sipped through it, from Unistraw, won the AIFST Food Industry Innovation Award.
The exhibition component of the Convention was also a success with 37 exhibitors showcasing the latest in products and services for the food industry.
According to Catherine Barnett, Executive Officer, Flavour South Australia, exhibiting at the AIFST Convention acted as a great means to increase the profile of the South Australian organization.
"It has been very beneficial for us to be a part of the Convention. It has drawn a great crowd and enabled us to increase awareness of our association. In addition, we have been able to showcase some of our members who are service providers to the industry with support from Food South Australia, the government agency," said Barnett.
Paul Kotaras, Oenobev said, “the exhibition component of the Convention has been great and acted as way to keep people informed. Technology is always improving and changing and delegates have been able to see the latest at the exhibition.”
The 40th Anniversary Annual AIFST Convention will be held at the Melbourne Convention Centre from 24 – 27 July 2007.
