International Congress of Dietetics is an international conference held once in four years by International Confederation of Dietetic Associations. Since the first Conference held in the Netherlands in 1952, the 2008 Conference marks the 15th while serving as the place where dietitians and nutritionists from around the world come together and report their research findings and exchange opinions about issues, policies and education concerning nutrition and activities of dietitians.

Japans first dietitian training school was established in 1925, which produced 15 dietitians in the following year. Issues of nutrition and food change with the times - from rationalization and modernization of our diet based on modern dietetics, post-war food shortages, overnutrition following the economic development, lifestyle-related diseases currently at issue, food safety, nutritional disorders of the sick and elderly, etc. The Japan Dietetic Association has a history of 60 years, during which it has been investigating and studying ways to secure and improve the nutrition of the people, providing the government with cooperation in implementing its nutrition policies while carrying out other activities with the aim of improving the quality of dietitians and contributing to promote the welfare of the people across the country. At present, the Association has as many as about 57,000 members conducting research on the peoplefs nutrition, aspiring to distribute our expertise, while engaging in activities such as planning and operating seminars and training sessions to improve the status and quality of dietitians and registered dietitians. We also provide information through our periodical, gEiyo Nipponh, and, as a public-service corporation, strive to enhance our social activities for better health and welfare of the people.

Hosting this traditional congress in Japan has been a long-time dream of the Japan Dietetic Association, and we, together with Prefectural Dietetic Associations, are now fully devoted to the preparation to make the dream come true. In addition to the enhanced programs, we are organizing a party, concert, exhibition and many other events to serve as a place for mutual exchange among the participants. We are sure that you will have a fully enjoyable time there.

The 15th International Congress of Dietetics will be held for dietitians around the world to search for new solutions to food and nutrition issues for the benefit of human health. A number of health problems are attributable to unbalanced food allocation; people in some countries suffer from overnutrition while some other countries still face a high mortality rate caused by malnutrition.

Food globalization poses an urgent need for the entire world to discuss issues at the same level, including the emergence of new harmful factors, development and introduction of new technologies such as genetic modification, unlimited processed foods and frequent outbreaks of incidents worldwide that threaten food safety.

Primary keys for maintaining good human health are guaranteed food security and adequate food supply to meet the demand of the global population. We are now faced with a situation in which we must establish policies based on scientific evidence and deal with such issues as problems shared worldwide in order to provide people everywhere with sufficient nutrition for health maintenance.

Now the world is split in two extremes, namely, malnutrition and overnutrition, and each country is challenging different issues. Dietitians have always engaged in new research and information gathering to raise the level of dietetics in an attempt to prevent and treat diseases as well as maintain peoplefs health so as to solve the problems of their countries. Those countries still suffering from malnutrition, however, are confronted with issues such as, securing food supply, enhancing food that lacks nutrients and preventing infectious diseases. The countries with the problem of overnutrition, on the other hand, are challenged by diseases deriving from adverse lifestyle and food-intake such as, obesity, diabetes, cardiopathy and cerebropathy.

Fortunately, Japan has experienced a big shift from the phase of malnutrition to overnutrition caused by rapid economic recovery in a relatively short period of time, and has become the worldfs most aged society. The country shares its challenges in the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome and other lifestyle-related diseases as well as caring for the elderly with the rest of the world. The Japan Dietetic Association has been fortunate enough to experience various situations in each phase and taken effective measures to solve such problems. We wish to offer this International Congress as the place to provide nutrition professionals from other countries with the information gained through this rich experience and to mutually learn from one another.

With the aim of solving problems faced by each country, this Congress is expected to make great social contribution in wide-ranging fields as the opportunity to spread technologies and knowledge based on scientific evidence, standardize advanced technologies and address worldwide issues of nutrition in all of dietitians activities.

Achieving peace and harmony is the wish of six billion inhabitants of the world in the 21st century. We are very pleased to invite you and discuss the issues of nutrition and diet that affect the worldfs welfare at the 15th International Congress of Dietetics in 2008.
